Bookish Gotta-Have-It Items!

Science fiction is full of powerful tech and weapons and fantasy brims with fantastical magic. But I can’t tell you which item from my books I most want to own and why, because you’ve got to wait just a bit longer to be able to read them.

Lucky for you, I read a lot and I’ve got gobs of things I dream about collecting—if only they were here in the real world! So if you need some ideas…

Jeffe may not have been able to pick out an object from her Twelve Kingdoms series, but I’ve always wanted High Queen Ursula’s sword! You can see how pretty it is on the cover of The Talon of the Hawk though you can’t really see the best part—the powerful stone set in the pommel! It's a sword! With power!! Ahhh—gimme!

Ever feel like you need to get away—like really get away? Then you’ll want what I want: Chaos. No, not like you’re thinking. Chaos is Catarina von Hasenberg’s customized spaceship from Chaos Reigning. Jessie Mihalik’s Consortium Rebellion series is full of absolutely drool-worthy spaceships, but I like Cat’s Chaos best. Just the right size, a food synthesizer that would bring me perfect french breakfasts, and the best bedroom.

Of course, if you can’t run away maybe you want to leave it all behind…in the past. Or future! I want the tech to time travel that Mike Chen wrote in Here and Now and Then! It could also have something to do with the emotion Kin’s story gave me, but this kind of time travel would be so perfect in my back pocket!

I absolutely need a magic scissors like Maia wields in Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim! Maia has the impossible challenge of creating three gowns, one from the laughter of the sun, one from the tears of the moon, and one from the blood of the stars. Yes. This book is fabulous, rich in mythology, and has an awesome magic scissors!!

And when I need some downtime, I want Kvothe’s lute. If you haven’t picked up this hefty fantasy…I—I don’t know what to tell you because The Name of the Wind is epic on so many levels and you’re seriously missing out. Kvothe may have some fae blood in him, he definitely has blessed fingers, but sorry Patrick Rothfuss, I’m pretty sure if I had his lute I’d be able to make music like the world’s never heard before!

There you go, these books should hold you out until you can read one of mine. Have you read any of these? Do we have the same gotta-have-its?

  1. What a great list! And I'm so flattered that you want Ursula's sword :-) We won't discuss what you'd do with the power of the Star of Annfwn, however...
