LARCOUT
Fire Born, Blood Blessed: Book 1
SPFBO 2016 Finalist!

Blood-beings can be chattel or char.

Fire seethes through the veins of every Morsam, demanding domination and destruction. Combat is a hobby. Slaughtering the inferior blood-beings is entertainment. Life is a repetitious cycle in the prison fashioned by the gods. But mix-race abomination Vadrigyn os Harlo suspects the key to freedom lies in safeguarding the blood-beings; until her blood-born mother uses foreign magic to turn the Morsam against her. Betrayed, bound, and broken, Vadrigyn struggles against the dying of her essential fire. Yet the ebbing flames unleash the dormant magic of her mixed heritage…

The magic to destroy free will.

Seized by the gods and dumped in the desert nation of Larcout to stop history from repeating, Vadrigyn discovers her mother’s legacy of treason and slaughter still festers. To survive the intrigues of the royal court, the roiling undercurrents of civil war, and the gods themselves, Vadrigyn must unravel the conspiracy behind her mother’s banishment. But manipulating free will unleashes a torrent of consequences.

If she fails the gods, she will return to the Morsam prison, stripped of all magic and all hope.

If she succeeds, she can rule a nation.

Stay Warm This Winter: Bring Home A Fire Warrior

Setting the🎶 mooooood 🎶 for delving into one of my books, eh? Since it's winter, and Mother Nature just dumped a bunch of hail, sleet, and snow on my turf, I'm going to recommend the following for my High Fantasy Larcout:

  1. Pick a stormy day, one where the pitter-patter of the elements against your roof provides nature's white noise. (Bonus if you have a metal roof. Those acoustics...~chef's kiss~)
  2. Light a fire in the fireplace (No, don't light one in that room. Finish the book, then you'll be suitably armed to address whatever growls and writhes within that festering space.)
  3. Collect your favorite rocks, crystals, and geodes into a serving bowl. Place it near your snuggle seat.
  4. Grab your favorite snowglobe. Yep. Snowglobe. Give it a good shake at the end of each chapter. Once you start reading, you'll understand why.
  5. Pour your libation. Absolutely no water, though. Keep reading. Reasons will be revealed.
  6. Settle into your coziest chair/couch/bed. Burrow under your animal print, beaded, bedazzled, or straight-up sparkly blanket(s).
  7. ENJOY!

Bagorn the Betrayer

In dubious honor of the Ides of March, we're outing our most villainous characters--either the ones we've written or the ones we love to hate that someone else has written.

My most evil, hateful, and malicious villain? Larco Bagorn from LARCOUT. He's king of the country by right of birth. A member of the order of Dark Minds, he is a Memory Maker. With one touch, with the power to see people's pasts and change them with just one touch. He has zero guilt or hesitation to use his gift. His top 5 most dastardly deeds:

  1. He stole the love of his brother's life and his brother's kid, claiming them as his own. Changed his brother's memories of said love and child, so his brother believes they are the king's.
  2. Had the general of his military rape his wife to beget another heir, erased the general's memory, but made the wife keep hers.
  3. Alters the memories of nobles and advisors to set them at odds, thus fomenting rebellions then executing everyone associated.
  4. Closed his nation's borders to create scarcity, to turn the helot class against the nobility, and to turn the nobility against each other.
  5. Personal Plot Goal: To destroy the nation he rules because they wouldn't let him love the man he loved.
Power is a dangerous thing, especially when no one can call you to account...until the hero shows up.

Beware the Ides and Plagues of March: Favorite (Written) Murder

As days in quarantine stretch without a light of reprieve, those who enjoy being left the hell alone now find themselves trapped with other beings who require attention and maintenance. They may find their thoughts turning to murder...

...Fictitious murder, folks. We're all about the fantasy here.

Not gonna lie, people and non-people die in my books (but never the dog!). Usually amid spatter and gore. Depending on the series, death is by blade, brute strength, or magic. Parasites that extract salt from a body while injecting venom that boils the blood. A portal that tears open a heart. Angel fire or electrocution. Eviction of a soul. How 'bout an old fashioned neck snap. The bodies do pile up in my stories.

The murder that still makes me snicker (because I'm an evil author, natch) is from my debut novel LARCOUT where our fire-warrior protag is being introduced to a new culture that assumes women are feeble:
Vadrigyn pivoted. Her fist connected squarely with the nose of the closest fool…and punched through the back of his skull. Blood and brain oozed down her wrist and stained her vambrace. The body reduced to sand, leaving her with a skull bracelet.

Fragile blood-beings.

Soft blows, barely more than a swat at the air, would suffice to incapacitate a blood-being. She knew that. Gentle. She must be gentle in combat.

How absurd.
In this time of social distancing, please, Wash Your Damn Hands and Stay Home when possible. You don't know who around you is a carrier or immunocompromised. Dying from the plague is a shitastic way to go.

Backlist Love: LARCOUT

Often, authors are so focused on pimping our latest work that we sometimes neglect the great works we've already published. So, this Valentine's Day, I'm giving a little love to my first book, a high fantasy novel, LARCOUT.

LARCOUT
Fire Born, Blood Blessed: Book 1

Blood-beings can be chattel or char.

Fire seethes through the veins of every Morsam, demanding domination and destruction. Combat is a hobby. Slaughtering the inferior blood-beings is entertainment.
